The next Ys title has been officially teased by Japanese developer Nihon Falcom. The presumably titled Ys IX will take place immediately after the events that took place in 2016’s Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana. This was recently revealed in an interview that Nihon Falcom President Toshihiro Kondo had with ActuGaming and translated via NicheGamer.
According to the interview with Nihon Falcom President Toshihiro Kondo, development has already begun on the next sequel in the long-running action JRPG series. The most recent game, Lacrimosa of Dana, was the eighth in the series and came to PS4, PlayStation Vita, PC, and most recently, Nintendo Switch. It was localized here in the West by NIS America.
When the series was brought up in the interview with ActuGaming, Nihon Falcom President Toshihiro Kondo had this to say:
“Regarding the Ys series, we are working on a new game. It will not be a remake but a brand new title. It will be about Adol and it will be right after the events of Ys VIII. I hope you will look forward to it.”
No title, story, setting, or gameplay details were given for the upcoming sequel outside of the fact that players will once again take the role of Adol and that it will follow up on the critically successful Lacrimosa of Dana. As NicheGamer notes, that game was announced at Tokyo Game Show before releasing in Japan in 2016.
Tokyo Game Show is coming up next month, with Sony’s PlayStation conference happening there on September 10. It is possible that like the previous game in the series, we will get our first glimpse of Ys IX at the Sony press conference then. While we wait for more details, check out other upcoming JRPG’s that look great like Dragon Quest XI and Kingdom Hearts III.
