With the new year arriving, many best of the decade lists are arriving and sports is certainly a topic that has plenty of bests. In terms of the hockey game, one of the new stars of the league is the Edmonton Oilers’ Connor McDavid. He’s the highest-rated in terms of EA’s NHL 20 player ratings ahead of several other major stars in the league. Will he be able to stay on top, though?
NHL 20 Player ratings: Gamers believe McDavid will continue his stay on top
On New Year’s Eve 2019, the EA Sports NHL Twitter presented a look at the top five when it comes to NHL 20 player ratings. They are Connor McDavid at 95 overall followed by the Penguins’ Sidney Crosby, Lightning’s Nikita Kucherov, Avalanche’s Nathan MacKinnon, and Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin.
Two of those stars are Stanley Cup champions, with the other three still in hot pursuit of their first. All five are prominent when it comes to team leaders and league leaders in stats. All of these guys started the season within the top 10 of the game’s ratings.
A good number of fans commenting on EA’s post about the NHL 20 player ratings believe that McDavid will continue his stay as the top-rated star into 2020. Some even believe he will be on top of that perch for most of the decade.
Connor McDavid was the NHL 18 cover star for the game back in 2017, just two years after Edmonton made him the first overall pick in the draft. It’s clear the Oilers organization and EA Sports realized his skills and potential. For the current season, he leads the NHL in points with 63 total. McDavid is fifth in goals with 22 and first in assists with 41.
The other players up there with McDavid are no slouches. Both Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin are Stanley Cup Champions. Kucherov has been a driving force of a Tampa Bay Lightning team that threatens each season. Nathan MacKinnon is leading a 39-23 Colorado Avalanche team behind 34 goals and 22 assists this season, per ESPN.
McDavid makes a lot of sense heading into the new decade. However, there were a few other replies that came up as potential candidates to replace him atop the ratings this time next year. Some of the answers included the Rangers’ Artemi Panarin, Rob Thomas, and current NHL 20 cover star, Auston Matthews.
