Almost two months ago, on the 1st of October, Respawn launched Apex Legends Season 3, their biggest season yet. The new season brought a new Legend, a new weapon, and even a new map, and EA made an effort to market the game, even releasing two retail editions. Now, data revealed by SuperData’s October 2019 report shows that Season 3 has been a success, giving the game its best-performing month since its launch quarter.
Apex Legends Season 3 was a Major Success
According to SuperData, Apex Legends generated $45 million in revenue from in-game spending in October, including both console and PC; enough to get it the #9 spot on their list of “Top Grossing” games on console. The $45 million figure was a sharp increase over their previous month’s performance. The game only generated around $16 million in September, suggesting that Season 3 prompted a huge surge in active players.
“Respawn’s shooter has clearly grown into an important growth driver for EA since its launch in February […]” states SuperData. Indeed, Apex Legends has had something of a bumpy road since launch. At launch, a number of factors contributed to the game getting an enormous amount of attention; it was free-to-play, the game was totally unknown prior to its release announcement, and the media quickly began casting it as a rival to Fortnite, for instance. Ultimately, this huge surge in interest turned out to be unsustainable, and its numbers plummeted even after its first month.
Since then, Respawn has been gradually making improvements and adding more content. Each of its season launches has been bigger than the last, and Season 3 has been its most successful ever. While it might not ever reach the lofty heights that it achieved at launch, it does look likely that it will continue to grow with future seasons. Certainly, if it can sustain the growth it saw in October, then the future of Apex Legends could be interesting indeed.
