Octopath Traveler is a brand new, original I.P. from Square Enix that is a Nintendo Switch exclusive. The massive JRPG harkens back to classic Final Fantasy games of the past but also does some new things that make the experience feel fresh and unique on the handheld console. The title sports a total of eight characters who all have their own full-length playable campaign and the each of them all have unique abilities to use in the field to their advantage, like being able to steal from NPC’s or flirt with them to get what you want.
Eurogamer sat down with Octopath Traveler producer, Masashi Takahashi, to talk about his game, why it was developed for the Nintendo Switch, and more importantly, talks about the possibility of Octopath as a series:
“When we started to make Octopath Traveler, the Switch wasn’t ready! It was just a prototype – we didn’t know that much about the hardware. We just started because we wanted to make an RPG for a handheld system, but we didn’t really know what hardware it was going to be.”
“No-one could imagine the Switch becoming such a phenomenon – it was new hardware. At first, people were like ‘are you sure, it’s new hardware, it’s risky…’ But we trusted that if we made a great game, players would follow us into our trial.”
“We really want the first concept we sell at full price to be 100 percent of the game, so there won’t be any DLC in the future. As for Octopath as a series, it depends on the sales – if the players like the game it could be an opportunity, yes. But it’s still not out yet, so we’ll see!”
Octopath Traveler launches exclusively for the Nintendo Switch on July 13. For more on this interview with Takahashi, you can read the entirety of it right here.
