Onimusha: Warlords will make its triumphant return next year in an HD remaster for Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The high-definition remaster of the original supernatural samurai title will release on January 15, 2019 in North America and Europe for the MSRP of $19.99 digitally. It will also have a physical release only in North America exclusively for PS4 and Xbox One.
Capcom announced the release of the Onimusha: Warlords HD remaster in a press release and an accompanying announcement trailer, which you can view below. Warlords is a 2001 action adventure title that originally released on PS2, the original Xbox, and PC. It spawned three main sequels and a couple of spin-offs before going mostly quiet in recent years.
Onimusha: Warlords follows the samurai Samanosuke Akechi and the ninja Kaede as they journey into a dangerous castle to save the Princess Yuki. Players take the role of both characters throughout the game as you use a mix of swordplay and your magical Oni gauntlet to take out demons and other otherworldly creatures.
The Onimusha: Warlords HD remaster will include the aforementioned high-definition visuals on all platforms, as well as a widescreen display option, analog stick support, a more accessible easy difficulty level, and a new soundtrack. Players will be able to relive or experience for the first time the cinematic, historically-inspired storyline of Warlords early next year.
As noted in the press release from Capcom, the original Onimusha: Warlords went on to sell more than two million copies worldwide with the franchise as a whole being the seventh best-selling series from Capcom. There hasn’t been a proper Onimusha game, discounting the Japan-exclusive browser title, since 2006’s Dawn of Dreams for PS2. It remains to be seen if this HD remaster is gauging interest for the series’ return with a brand new entry in the future.
