Sony has just released a new financial report which reveals that 79 million PlayStation 4 units have shipped around the world as of March 31st. As the company predicts that it will sell another 16 million PS4 units by the end of the current fiscal year, that means that PS4 sales are soon to overtake PS3 sales.
That is quite impressive considering that PlayStation 4 managed to achieve that milestone within just four years. That also puts some perspective on the fact that console sales are decreasing year-over-year. Taken within a broader context, there is nothing negative or unexpected in that—especially given that the console is well into its life cycle with PS5 under development.
Sony’s Chief Exucutive Officer Kaz Hirai is soon to depart the company. During his tenure, the company has definitely done better than it did under the previous CEO. The fiscal year which just came to an end generated $6.7 billion in profits overall, with $1.6 billion of those coming from PlayStation alone.
That means that moving forward, Sony has a lot to be optimistic about. The company’s financials are doing great, and PlayStation on the whole looks to be more popular and successful than ever. With PlayStation 5 on the horizon, Sony is in a great position to remain in the lead in the console war.
