Rumor: PS5 May Feature a Cortana-Like Chatbot

Is it possible that the PS5 might include a Cortana-like chatbot which allows the user to control the unit using voice commands? There are a cluster of patents which indicate that this could be on the way. Two of them came out a while ago, while the other is newer.

Why the PS5 May Include a Cortana-Like Chatbot

SegmentNext reported on all of these patents, explaining that one of the earlier ones referenced a Cortana-like “PlayStation Assistant.” Another previous patent indicated that the built-in mic in the DualSense might accept voice commands. As for the newest patent, that one details how the AI aspect of the PlayStation Assistant could make determinations about user intent, responding to voice commands accordingly. Apparently the assistant may also be represented by a lip-syncing avatar. The report offers the following images, which give you a bit more insight into the possible chatbot:

Will all of this come to pass? Maybe, maybe not. Patents are a good indication of where Sony’s interests lie. But they are not a confirmation that a new technology will go to market. So, for the moment, this is just a rumor, and it is best to take it with a grain of salt. But it would be a great feature to incorporate to improve accessibility and convenience.

Also, some gamers are worried about possible privacy issues involving the built-in mic in the DualSense controller. Sony has probably thought about these, and hopefully will address the concerns directly at some point. But we will have to wait and see.
