Niantic, the developer studio of Pokemon GO has just acquired Seismic Games. Seismic is the studio behind Marvel: Strike Force and together, the two developers will continue expanding their hold on AR gamming. Does this mean we might see a new title using AR mechanics releasing in the years to come?
Over the past month, Pokemon GO managed to win back its popularity through a series of updates and community events. Since Niantic is now out of the blue, they can explore the possibilities of new mobile titles, especially now, with the help of Seismic Games.
As for Marvel: Strike Force’s developer, it is a studio comprised of industry veterans hailing from EA/Pandemic and Activision. They are currently in works with major partners like Marvel, FoxNext, Sony Television, Alcon Interactive, and others, on cutting edge mobile and VR games like Marvel: Strikeforce & Blade Runner: Revelations.
The acquisition doesn’t mean that Seismic will drop their current projects. Niantic will support and help their new studio with their games as well as create new ones, using the existing knowledge of both parties. The Pokemon GO developers stated, in a recent blog post:
“We recently gave a peek under the hood of the Niantic Real World Platform, and we see the addition of Seismic Games as a significant accelerant for realizing our vision of an operating system that bridges the digital and the physical worlds.”
“At Niantic, we’re committed to our mission of motivating people to exercise, be social, and discover new places. We’re confident that Seismic Games will help us deliver on that mission — faster, and better.”
In addition, Niantic is currently making an opening to the TV “world” by bringing an Ingress anime series to our screens. Undeniably, mobile gaming is quickly gaining more and more popularity in the gaming undustry, coming to the extend that high-end gaming mobile games have become emerging in the market.
