After several months of radio silence, Arkane Studios and Bethesda have announced a launch date for Prey’s Typhon Hunter expansion. The expansion adds a unique new competitive multiplayer experience into the game that pits one human player against five mimics. Typhon Hunter launches tomorrow, December 11, on all platforms.
Prey Typhon Hunter Update
In Typhon Hunter, one player controls a human avatar while the other five play as Typhon mimics. The five mimic players can assume the shape of ordinary objects like lamps and coffee mugs, just like in single-player. However, also like in single-player, the mimic players can’t withstand the human player’s superior armaments and defenses. Instead, the mimics have to wait until an opportune moment to strike and whittle the human player’s health down.
The human player has a limited amount of time to find and kill all five mimic players. It’s assumed the human player also has very limited ammo reserves to prevent them from simply shooting everything around them. You can see Typhon Hunter in action via the below trailer.
While the Typhon Hunter mode itself is free, it’s only available to owners of Prey’s paid Mooncrash DLC expansion. Mooncrash, which adds a repeatable roguelike scenario into the core game, costs $19.99. Those who don’t already own Prey can purchase a $39.99 Deluxe version which includes both the core game and Mooncrash.
Arkane Studios first teased the competitive Typhon Hunter mode back when it first launched Mooncrash in June of this year. However, since that initial tease very little has been said about Typhon Hunter over the following months. Some fans speculated the mode would be delayed into 2019, but it seems Arkane got in just under the gun.
Meanwhile, Arkane has also been releasing updates for Mooncrash which include new cosmetic items among other things. One of the studio’s co-founders also recently commented on Prey’s polarizing third story act.
