If you live in Japan and like to shop for PS4 games from the PlayStation Store, we have some unfortunate news for you. The PS4 game prices in your region have just gone up on PSN. Not in Japan, but like to purchase games through the Japanese version of the PlayStation Store and then transfer them over? This price hike is going to affect you as well.
What You Should Know About Higher PS4 Game Prices in Japan
The reason for the price jump has to do with Japan’s consumption tax. Previously, that tax was 8%. But it has increased 2% and is now 10%. That means that if you are just purchasing a few small, inexpensive titles, this won’t impact you in a big way. But if you are loading up on purchases, you may notice the difference.
Can you just buy your games through another Japanese retailer and get out of paying the higher consumption tax? Nope. There is nothing arbitrary in Sony’s PS4 game price increases. You aren’t being gouged in any way. The costs have only gone up by the 2% increase of the consumption tax, which applies anywhere you shop for games in Japan. This is just something that you will have to deal with for the foreseeable future.
As the consumption tax already increased, you cannot do anything to prepare for it (like buying up a bunch of games quickly while they are still more affordable). You just will have to budget more carefully for purchases through the Japanese PlayStation Store going forward. Whatever you normally would expect something to cost with tax thrown in, you’ll need to tack on a bit more when you are planning your expenses.
