Most gamers tend to focus on graphics when it comes to video game realism. But graphics are just the visual component of realism. The quality of sound is important too. Now, Samuel Justice, Co-Founder and Supervising Sound Designer of Sweet Justice Sound, has talked about just what a big deal PS5 3D audio will be for the future of games.
Why PS5 3D Audio is So Important
Justice said, “I think the raw computing power needed to create realistic audio models is largely overlooked. In the past, we have managed to create fairly good representations of acoustic modelling through a lot of trickery and clever techniques. The ability to fully realise automated 3D audio is a big step forward for game audio and will certainly result in much richer experiences.”
That certainly sounds exciting! High quality sounds can go a long way toward boosting immersion in a video game setting and really bringing an experience to life. Just think of games in past generations which were renowned in part for their atmospheric sounds (i.e. Bioshock), and how much more immersive those types of games could be with super realistic 3D audio on the PS5.
Impressive performance features like this one are probably going to result in a high price tag for both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, as discussed by analysts in recent interviews. But so far, most price predictions for the next gen consoles have not been ludicrous. So, likely, we will be paying somewhere between $500 and $600 for either new console. Still, that is pricey enough, and needless to say, it is time to start saving up.
