If there is one thing which can pull you right out of a gaming experience, it is sitting through load screens. While some gamers may take load screens for granted, just think what the experience of gaming would be like without them. It might be hard to imagine. But if a recent patent is any indication, the days of load screens could come to an end with PS5.
How PS5 May Ensure Gameplay is “Not Interrupted”
You can view the full patent in question here. It is titled, “System and method for dynamicaly loading game software for smooth game play.” Here is the abstract:
“A system and method are disclosed for dynamically loading game software for smooth game play. A load boundary associated with a game environment is identified. A position of a character in the game environment is then monitored. Instructions corresponding to a next game environment are loaded into a memory when the character crosses the load boundary, such that game play is not interrupted.”
Basically, imagine a game world as a grid. Say you are standing in one box on that grid, and that is the location that you see. In the past, if you wanted to move to any other box on the grid, you’d need to sit in front of a load screen. But now, the boxes which are immediately adjacent to your position will be loaded in the background while you play. That way, if you decide to venture into a new box, it will be there waiting for you.
So even though most of us have gotten used to waiting through load screens, if they do go away, that is going to be a huge improvement! We can just keep right on gaming. But this isn’t the only interesting news we’ve unearthed this month involving a Sony patent. We also recently have noticed a patent which suggests a performance boost for PS4 games played on PS5.
