You have almost certainly read at least some of the articles we’ve posted over recent months in which developers comment on the SSD and other exciting elements of the PlayStation 5. From these interviews, a couple of themes emerge. First, the PS5 is about evolution, not revolution. Also, developing games for the PS5 is a joy. Now, Shuhei Yoshida has commented a bit more on how developers are saying that PS5 makes game development easy.
What Shuhei Yoshida Has Heard from Studios About PS5 Making Game Development Easy
You probably know that until recently, Yoshida was the President of SIE Worldwide Studios. Currently, he is the Head of Independent Developer Initiative at Sony. He was interviewed recently in Dengeki PlayStation magazine, Vol.683, as reported by DualShockers.
In the interview, apparently Yoshida put some perspective on the evolution of PlayStation consoles and how that evolution has impacted the difficulty or ease of game development. PS3, for instance, challenged developers quite a bit—and not in a positive way. So, PS4 was developed to remedy those problems. As for PS5, it has yielded yet more improvements over the PS4 in this respect. As DualShockers states, “Shuhei Yoshida also mentioned that many developers are telling Sony they never worked on a console as easy to develop on as PS5.”
Because it is easier to develop for the PS5 and because the powerful SSD provides more freedom and flexibility, developers are able to “focus on what is most fun” when they are designing levels. Hopefully, this will have the result of even better games on the PS5, which is what many gamers want most with the next generation of consoles.
