Hoping for a slim, lightweight, compact console when you purchase your PlayStation 5? Well, it doesn’t seem like that is going to be the case. Judging by a recent product listing, the PS5 will be significantly heavier than the PS4. While this is not an official confirmation of the weight, it is worth paying attention to.
How We Know the PS5 Will Be Significantly Heavier Than PS4
The product listing for the PS5 is at the German Amazon. Assuming the information in the listing is accurate, the weight for the PlayStation 5 is 4.78 kg, or 10.54 pounds. Sound like a lot? It is. For comparison, the PS4 is 6.17 pounds. That makes the PS5 almost twice as heavy as the PS4! Yikes.
But hey, look on the bright side. The PS3 is 11.02 pounds. So, even if the PS5 really will weigh 10.54 pounds, at least it is still marginally lighter than the PS3. But we can take a guess and assume its dimensions could be similar to those of the PS3. But the German Amazon listing did not mention anything about the length, width and height of the device.
Is there a reason why the PS5 will be heavier and possibly bulkier than the PS4? Yes. You might recall back in February we reported that the PS5 should have a much better cooling unit than the PS4. The PS4 was prone to overheating, and Sony wanted to avoid that happening with the PS5. The PS4’s compact design probably was a contributing factor. So, it stands to reason that the PS5 would not be quite so compact.
While we are not thrilled at the idea of a bulky, heavy console, we would rather it be functional and not overheat than be tiny and lightweight. Having your console overheat can be disruptive and scary. There should be plenty more news soon regarding the PS5 since its release is just a few months away. So, keep up with our PlayStation news while you wait for November to roll around!
