Can’t stand waiting around for a full game installation to finish? Wish you could free up space on your console by removing just a portion of a game? With current and previous PlayStation consoles, we have never had a whole lot of control over the installation process. But, thankfully, it looks like that is all about to change with the PlayStation 5.
How You Will Have Increased Installation Control on PS5
Wired was speaking with Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan and system architect Mark Cerny regarding a variety of topics involving the PlayStation 5. This came on the same day that the official name and the holiday 2020 launch window for the PlayStation 5 were revealed by Sony.
Discussing both installations and un-installations, Cerny said, “Rather than treating games like a big block of data, we’re allowing finer-grained access to the data.”
While this may sound ambiguous, what it amounts to is greater choice and control on the part of the gamer. If you know you will never play the multiplayer component or add-on content for a game, you can opt to install without them. Doing leaves more space available on your hard drive and also requires less time. Should you complete a game and realize you will only ever play one component of it in the future, you can remove the rest. So, you won’t be bogging down your system with any more data than you are actually going to be using.
This should come as a welcome change for many gamers. Hopefully, we also will be given greater control over a broad range of operations on the PS5. It is quite likely that Sony will let us know more about the installation features and others for the next-gen console over the months ahead. With the 2020 holiday release schedule coming up in what we would guess is around a year, it is time for us to begin finding out all about what will make this Sony’s most competitive console to date.
