Sony recently unveiled one heck of a surprise for PlayStation Plus subscribers when it announced that Destiny 2 will be among the free PS Plus games on offer for September, 2018. The news obviously wasn’t as exciting for those who already own Destiny 2, but as one Redditor recently pointed out, there’s actually a pretty strong incentive for those who already have a physical Destiny 2 disc to go ahead and download the digital PS Plus version.

As Redditor mayhem-8 explains on the official Destiny subreddit, Destiny 2 disc owners can essentially use the digital PS Plus version to bypass the disc reading check that the PlayStation 4 system usually requires. The exact steps to achieve this aren’t too complicated, you just have to make sure you do them in the right order:
- Delete the Destiny 2 install from your PlayStation 4 console.
- “Purchase” the free PS Plus digital version of Destiny 2 (it should show up as free if you have an active PS Plus subscription).
- Navigate to the purchased games section of your Library tab and re-download Destiny 2, making sure you select “Destiny 2 Digital.”
By following the above steps, you’ll essentially be able to access your Destiny 2 client, along with any expansions and extra content you’ve purchased, without having to first insert your physical Destiny 2 disc. A commenter in mayhem-8’s post also mentioned how you can use a similar trick to play Destiny 2 on two separate PlayStation 4 consoles with both players able to access your purchased expansions and other content. (though that process is a bit more complicated).
The free PS Plus offer has arrived just in time for next week’s launch of the Forsaken expansion, If you’re curious about how Bungie plans to continue supporting Destiny 2 beyond Forsaken, you’ll want to give this recently released ViDoc a watch.
