Detroit: Become Human has been performing extremely well. The latest game from studio Quantic Dream broke record after record for the company, claiming best-selling spots on most retail charts. Speaking in a recent Reddit AMA (Ask-Me-Anything), the studio head, David Cage, was asked about the possibility of a sequel to the hit sci-fi title.
David Cage’s Comments on a Possible Detroit Sequel
Years ago, after the release of Heavy Rain, Quantic Dream chose not to make a sequel; despite an outcry from fans hoping for a Heavy Rain 2. In fact, the studio has never made a sequel to any of their games. When asked whether the studio would consider making a sequel to Detroit: Become Human; Cage’s response was a lot less ironclad.
“We will work on a sequel if we feel we have ideas, passion and excitement to do it, and if we feel we have something more to say about this world,” he began; seemingly suggesting a shift in mentality at Quantic Dream. Detroit: Become Human’s setting might be Quantic Dream’s largest and most original to date. Certainly, even if a sequel didn’t return to the same characters; there’s plenty of potential for new stories set in the same world. Indeed; Cage seemed to be very aware of that.
“We are driven by passion more than anything,” continued Cage, “although it is not always something reasonable… but we enjoyed working on Detroit a lot, and there are many exciting stories that could be told in this world for sure.”
Although the game has certainly performed well enough to justify a sequel from a financial standpoint, Cage was clear that the studio was not motivated purely by profit. He stated that Quantic Dream would not develop a sequel to Detroit for; “easy money.” On the subject of DLC, Cage was similarly hazy. Unsurprisingly, he stated that he wasn’t able to announce anything. However, he also said that Quantic Dream would need to “make a choice”. Potentially between developing DLC or a sequel.
