During Bethesda’s E3 2018 press conference, id Software and Avalanche Studios were on hand to showcase a new gameplay trailer for their upcoming open-world shooter Rage 2. While we already know a fair amount about the apocalyptic sequel, such as how it will utilize Avalanche’s Apex game engine and what its pre-order bonuses are, the game’s new E3 trailer is still worth a watch since it guides viewers through an entire in-game mission and, naturally, shows off plenty of chaotic carnage while doing so.
The trailer opens up with some narration from Rage 2’s protagonist, a man named Walker, as he laments about how he lost everything when an asteroid crashed into Earth, wiping out the world as we know it and leaving only a ruined, sun-scorched wasteland in its wake. After that, the trailer quickly transitions into a gameplay segment as Walker sets out to liberate a vital eco-center outpost from a gang of punk-style bandits. En-route to the outpost, Walker, driving a vehicle outfitted with an array of weaponry, crosses paths with a convoy of enemy vehicles, engaging in some hectic on-wheels combat before arriving at the outpost itself.
Once there, Walker utilizes his arsenal of weapons and supernatural powers to make short work of the bandits before securing the outpost and calling down a massive eco-pod. Inside the pod, Walker unlocks a new power before the villainous Authority shows up, forcing Walker to fight his way out and confront a monstrous new threat as the trailer ends.
The trailer offers a pretty good look at how missions will typically unfold in Rage 2, i.e. with lots of explosions, bullets, and foul-mouthed bandits being dismembered in various ways. As of this writing, Rage 2 doesn’t yet have a solid release date, though Bethesda did confirm during its E3 press conference that the sequel will launch for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC sometime in spring, 2019.
