Rainbow Six Siege is heading to the land down under for its next content season, Operation Burnt Horizon. Along with two new playable operators, Burnt Horizon also includes a new map which is appropriately titled as ‘Outback.’ In a recent update post, developer Ubisoft shared some additional details on how Outback fits into Siege’s current map rotation.
Rainbow Six Siege Outback Map Details
Ubisoft’s update post starts out by sharing some backstory for the Outback map. Outback is a rural pit stop located in Australia’s Red Heart region. However, the sudden arrival of a banged up nuclear convey quickly prompts Team Rainbow’s involvement.
According to Siege’s Assistant Level Design Director Jacques Wong, Outback’s layout takes inspiration from two existing fan-favorite maps. If you enjoy Siege’s Clubhouse and Oregon maps, chances are you’ll find yet another favorite in Outback:
“We divided the map into three distinct sections and put a lot of effort into making sure each section is recognizable, even from far away. There are specific colors for each section, and we used lighting and geometry to direct the player’s gaze to where they need to go.
We wanted to emphasize the impact of player decision-making. So for example, there’s a limited number of doors between each section. Roamers can still create new paths by destroying walls, and there’s always the option of changing floors as a flanking strategy. It’s a medium-sized map, so players won’t need to go far to find alternative routes.”
All Rainbow Six Siege players will have free access to the Outback map when Operation Burnt Horizon launches. Those who purchased Siege’s Year 4 pass will also unlock immediate access to Burnt Horizon’s new operators. Speaking of which, Ubisoft will reveal Burnt Horizon’s launch date on February 17 during the Six Invitational tournament. In the meantime, Siege’s exhaustive February update is now live on all platforms.
