Radio stations have been a beloved staple of the Fallout series ever since the release of Fallout 3. Every core Fallout title since then has featured a few radio stations, often playing either classical music or a range of songs from the mid-1900s. (And indeed, some unique compositions made to sound as though they were from that era.) Of course, the radio will be returning in Fallout 76. However, it won’t have a DJ.
Why There is no DJ for the Fallout 76 Radio
Bethesda recently held a press event where journalists and others had the opportunity to play Fallout 76 for three hours. One thing which emerged from this was the discovery that the Fallout 76 radio has no DJ. Comicbook.com spoke with Bethesda at the event about this, and the studio explains why they chose to remove the DJ for this latest entry in the series.
The biggest reason for the lack of a DJ is that Fallout 76 has no human NPCs. With no humans existing in the game, it does make sense that there wouldn’t be a human DJ somewhere in Appalachia. In fact, the game’s project lead explains why having a DJ would also feel inconsistent; “Let’s be honest here, if we put a DJ somewhere on the map, what’s everyone going to do? They’re going to kill them. That seemed inconsistent with our lore and the world we were building.”
Of course, there are NPCs in Fallout 76, but none of them are humans; they’re robots. It’s possible that Bethesda could have featured a robot DJ, the problem of players killing them would still be a problem. After all, when multiple players exist in the same world, it would be frustrating if another player quickly killed the DJ in your world. Bethesda certainly doesn’t want other players to take away any part of the game’s experience from their fellow players.
