Red Dead Redemption 2 Had the Biggest Opening Weekend in the History of Entertainment

Red Dead Redemption 2 has only been out for just a few days and it’s already breaking records left and right. Rockstar Games sent out an official press release this morning about it. In it, the press release details all of the fantastic achievements that the highly anticipated game has reached. The biggest of these achievements is the fact that it had the single best opening weekend in the history of entertainment.

No, we’re not saying that Red Dead Redemption 2 had the biggest opening weekend for video games. We’re saying that it beat out every other video game, movie, TV show, book, and so on. In addition, the game grossed more than $725 million in sales numbers in its first three days. It technically didn’t beat out Grand Theft Auto V, which didn’t break the opening weekend record since it launched on a Tuesday.

That is far from all of the records that Red Dead Redemption 2 broke during its launch weekend. You can find the full list of the achievements below, courtesy of the official Rockstar Games press release:

  •      Biggest opening weekend in retail sell-through across all entertainment releases
  •      Second biggest launch (three days) in retail sell-through across all entertainment releases (beat by GTA V)
  •      Biggest entertainment launch of 2018
  •      Most pre-ordered full game ever on PlayStation Network
  •      Biggest day one full game sales ever on PlayStation Network
  •      Biggest first three days full game sales ever on PlayStation Network

Meanwhile, Red Dead Redemption 2 remains a critical success as well. The highly anticipated sequel is still sitting at a 97 Metacritic score for both the PS4 and Xbox One versions, matching other recent great games like Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey. The records are sure to continue to break as Red Dead Online releases in public beta sometime in November on PS4 and Xbox One.
