Red Dead Redemption 2: How to Find the War Horse Pre-Order Bonus In-Game

One of the perks available to those who pre-ordered Red Dead Redemption 2 is a snazzy War Horse steed. However, the War Horse mount isn’t available right from the get-go. Before you can add the exclusive mount to your stable, you’ll have to complete a few in-game tasks.

Finding the Red Dead Redemption 2 War Horse Mount

Before you do anything, ensure you have the appropriate permissions enabled for your account. If you pre-ordered Red Dead Redemption 2, you should have received a code to enter for enabling your pre-order incentives. Digital pre-order buyers shouldn’t have to enter any extra codes, but you might have to manually download the extra content. This can be done by navigating to the owned content section for Red Dead Redemption 2 on your respective console.

Once you’re sure you have the appropriate DLC downloaded, boot up the game and keep playing until you reach Chapter 2. During that chapter you’ll receive a mission called ‘Exit, Pursued by a Bruised Ego.’ The mission involves travelling into the town of Valentine and learning how to buy and sell horses. After you’ve worked through the mission critical dialogue, you’ll be given free rein to peruse the horse vendor’s stock.

Red Dead Redemption 2's War Horse is a worthy steed.

Most of the horses come at a hefty cost, but there’s one horse that should be labeled as free. The Grey Ardennes horse is in fact the War Horse you’re entitled to as an RDR2 pre-order buyer. If you’re looking for a leg up over the standard mount you’re given, the War Horse fits the bill. Just make sure you settle on one horse and stick with it to raise its bond level. Simple actions such as naming your horse and grooming it can help you forge such a bond.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Be sure to peruse all of our guide content for the game and to stay tuned for more content to come.
