Red Dead Redemption 2: How to Name Your Horse in RDR2

Red Dead Redemption 2 sets itself apart from the start with its immersive, detailed world. Rockstar left no stone unturned as they created their vision of an increasingly tamed Wild West (and South). Of course, that level of detail extends into the equine realm as well. Expect to find yourself surprisingly attached to the horse at your command, especially if you give them a name.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is an overwhelmingly large game, and it doesn’t always explain itself very well. Ten hours in, I’m still unsure how many of the game’s systems work. But, naming your horse is simple, provided you know where to go.

Name your horse at any stable in Red Dead Redemption 2's massive world.

Where to Go to Name Your Horse in Red Dead Redemption 2

You can name (and rename) your horse at any one of the stables that litter RDR2’s world. Early in the game, you can find the stable shown above in the nearby town of Valentine. Simply ride your horse through the open doors and a menu will open offering a variety of horse-related goods and services.

Mark the stable with a waypoint and a red line will lead you straight to it.

How to Rename Your Horse in Red Dead Redemption 2

Once the in-stable menu opens, select the bar labeled “Tack and Services.”

Select "Tack and Services" from the menu in-stable to rename your horse in RDR2.

From there, ignore anything tack-related for now, and select “Services.” Inside “Services,” you’ll see the option to “Rename Horse.” Select it, and a pop-up screen will appear, allowing you to name your horse. Be sure to pick something a cowboy could be proud of. Or, you know, something self-promoting.

Choose your horse's name wisely. Or don't. You can always return to the stable and rename it.

Voila! You are now free to travel through the desert, mountains and swamps of Red Dead Redemption 2’s take on America, on a horse with a name. It’s a nice touch, and one that will make it all the more gut-wrenching when your pal meets its inevitable, violent end. Giddy up!
