News recently came out that Red Dead Redemption 2 ships with two physical discs. As such, it’s no surprise that some players are worried about the Red Dead Redemption 2 install time. Having two discs for a physical game in 2018 is pretty surprising. That certainly seems like an issue that is a relic of 10 years ago and not in this generation.
We recently got our hands on an early access physical copy of the game; stay tuned for our upcoming review! Since we’ve gotten it before the official launch, we had the chance to check out the Red Dead Redemption 2 install time. It’s worth noting that the version that we have is for PS4 and not the Xbox One version. In fact, we do expect installs on that console to be a little bit faster or at least the same.
How Long to Install Red Dead Redemption 2
Before we get to the Red Dead Redemption 2 install time, let’s take a look at the discs. We can indeed confirm that the game does ship with two discs in all physical copies. It doesn’t matter which version of the game you get, you’ll have to deal with both of them. Because this is unprecedented this generation, it can be a bit confusing.
Essentially, one disc says “data disc” and must be inserted into your console first. The game will begin installing like normal but will show two bars. When the first bar is complete (around halfway), you will need to remove that disc and insert the “play disc.” From here on out, you won’t need the first disc anymore and can keep this second one in the console.
In total, you are going to need to wait a considerable amount of time. It initially gave an estimate of three hours to install but that went down quickly. The total install space was around 90GB on PS4 and it took around an hour and a half to finish. That doesn’t include the day one patch that’s around 3GB but it should be done downloading in time for you to play the game.
