Red Dead Redemption 2 Requires a Whopping 99 GB of Free HDD Space

No matter what version of Red Dead Redemption 2 you’re playing, you better clear some room on your hard drive. Rockstar has confirmed the game’s HDD space requirements and they are quite large even if you’re playing the retail disc version.

Red Dead Redemption 2 storage requirements

Rockstar’s support website recently provided the lowdown on Red Dead Redemption 2’s storage requirements. PS4 players will need to set aside a minimum of 99 GB of storage space to successfully install the game. If you’re playing the digital PS4 version, bump that number up to 150 GB. Regardless of which version they’re playing, Xbox One players must clear out a minimum of 107 GB of space.

The extra 50 GB needed for the PS4 digital version is only required for the initial install. That 50 GB should be freed back up once Red Dead Redemption 2 is done installing. Either way, it’s best to start cleaning out your hard drive now, especially if it’s been a while.

Red Dead Redemption 2 will be massive and incredibly detailed. It’s hardly surprising, then, that the game requires such a massive amount of hard drive space. Still, given how even large AAA games usually require 40-50 GB on average, Red Dead Redemption 2’s size is noteworthy.

Red Dead Redemption 2 requires a whole lot of storage space.

Downloading and installing Red Dead Redemption 2’s massive file size will undoubtedly take a while. Thankfully, you can start pre-loading right now if you bought the game’s digital version. Rockstar is also including a bulk of the game’s install files on a separate disc for the PS4 version. This means that the install should go by at a quicker pace since disc installing is quicker than downloading. Even the Xbox One disc install shouldn’t be too bad even though it’s all on a single disc.

No matter how you install Red Dead Redemption 2, you’ll be able to play the game on Friday, October 26. Stay tuned for more coverage over the coming days and for guide content once the game launches.
