Redditor Outlines How Destiny 2’s Swords Can Be Improved

The sword heavy weapon class was a welcome addition back during the original Destiny, and it returned in Destiny 2. However, swords in Destiny 2 don’t really have the same oomph factor that they did in the original Destiny. Sure, they can cut most enemies (and other players) to ribbons with ease, but they’re noticeably lacking in other areas. One dedicated Redditor decided to chronicle the major issues affecting Destiny 2’s swords and explain how they can be fixed.

Destiny 2 Sword Improvements

Destiny 2 potential sword improvements

As Redditor RoElementz tells it, Destiny 2’s swords need some serious work. They are undoubtedly visceral and fun to wield, but their general use leaves much to be desired. Here are some of the problems RoElementz outlines:

  • Unlike all other weapon types, swords don’t allow players to utilize special melee abilities while they’re equipped. Titans can’t use Shoulder Charge, Hunters can’t use Throwing Knives or Smoke Bombs. This effectively hobbles Guardian classes who rely on such abilities.
  • The guard/block mechanic is effectively worthless. Sure, it technically works, but since blocking uses up a sword’s limited ammo supply, it’s rarely worth doing.
  • Swords are strictly heavy weapons. The lack of kinetic/energy slot swords means players always have to choose between swords or long-distance heavy weapons. This means swords are effectively worthless in high-level activities since rocket/grenade launchers are almost always preferred.

Fortunately, RoElementz came up with some solutions to accompany the problems they outline. For example, Bungie could add in various guarding perks which would offer tangible benefits for blocking attacks. Adding some kinetic or energy swords to the mix wouldn’t be a bad idea either. In short, Destiny 2’s swords feel pretty good now, but they could certainly feel a lot better.

For now, Bungie’s main priority is undoubtedly the upcoming Black Armory expansion. However, given the expansion’s weapon-based theme, a sword-focused revamp wouldn’t be out of the question. In the meantime, Destiny 2 players at least have some new pinnacle weapons to earn.
