Two days ago, Creative Assembly unveiled the trailer for The Shadow and The Blade, the next Lord Pack DLC for Total War: Warhammer 2. That pack will be adding Malus Darkblade as a new Dark Elf Legendary Lord and Deathmaster Snikch as one for the Skaven. However, for the first time ever, the accompanying Total War: Warhammer 2 Free-LC lord will be from a different faction than those featured in the DLC. Instead, Creative Assembly has managed to surprise most fans with a very unexpected pick; that of Repanse de Lyonesse, a new Legendary Lord for Bretonnia.
The Next Total War: Warhammer 2 FLC Lord: Repanse de Lyonesse
Typically, whenever Creative Assembly releases a DLC Lord Pack, they also release a supplemental Legendary Lord for free. This character has always been for one of the same factions as those in the accompanying DLC; Alith Anar alongside The Queen and The Crone, Tiktaq’to with The Prophet and The Warlock, and then Gor-rok with The Hunter and The Beast. Howerer, that trend has now been broken, as the FLC lord alongside The Shadow and The Blade will be for Bretonnia, itself an FLC faction which was released for the first game in the series.
Since that first release, Bretonnia have never gotten more content. One of the first Old World Updates was for the Bretonnians. However, it didn’t add any new units or Legendary Lords. Now, not only will Repanse de Lyonesse be their first new addition in years, but she will be the first Bretonnian Legendary Lord to be playable in The Eye of the Vortex campaign. Most of the details about Repanse are still under wraps. However, it is known that despite being the leader of the duchy of Lyonesse, she will lead a new faction; the Chevaliers de Lyonesse. Given that this is the name of her crusading army, rather than a geographical state, it’s possible that she could lead a horde faction with similar mechanics to Nakai the Wanderer.
Repanse’s Backstory and Game Statistics
Lore-wise, Repanse is a relatively obscure character. She did not have official tabletop rules past the 5th edition of the Warhammer Fantasy Battles tabletop game. (Hence why she’s a somewhat unexpected pick for Total War.) Her backstory has obvious parallels with the story of Joan of Arc. As a peasant girl, Repanse received a vision from the Lady of the Lake, prompting her to take up the Sword of Lyonesse from her village chapel and rally the knights of Bretonnia against a great Chaos invasion. After her victory, King Louis the Young rewarded her by making her the Duchess of Lyonesse.
In-game, Repanse will be a frontline fighter who wields a greatsword. This blade is, in fact, one of her two magic items, the Sword of Lyonesse. (The other being the Fleur de Lys Banner). She also has the Halo of Maidenly Wrath; a powerful special ability which causes a blinding and damaging blast around her which only harms enemies. Plus, Repanse is joined by a unique hero character; Henri le Massif. Stat-wise, Henri is similar to a Bretonnian Paladin, but with the unique ability to get a griffon as a mount.
