Resident Evil 2 Game Director Reveals Fascinating (And Terrifying) Insights About Mr. X

One of the scariest elements about the Resident Evil 2 remake is undoubtedly the Tyrant, known also as Mr. X. Once he shows up, Mr. X acts as a constant threat, tracking and stalking the player using his unique AI. The logistics of how Mr. X’s AI functions have been the subject of much debate amongst the remake’s community. In a recent interview with PC Gamer, Resident Evil 2 game director Kazunori Kadoi set the Mr. X record straight.

Resident Evil 2 Mr. X Behavior Quirks

Resident Evil 2 Mr. X interview

The interview focused specifically on Mr. X and how his AI makes him such a terrifying part of the game. Mr. X can stalk the player across multiple rooms, and if he hears gunfire you know he’ll come running. Even the bravest zombie-slayers will give pause when they hear Mr. X’s ominous footsteps nearby.

According to Kadoi, the sounds used to create Mr. X’s heavy thudding footsteps weren’t drawn from an actual person’s footsteps. They’re actually a mixture of different sounds meant to mimic the heavy crashing footfalls of a very, *very* large man. Also, while Mr. X can’t magically detect the player from afar, Kadoi revealed this interesting little detail:

“I don’t want to divulge details, but what I can say is that if Tyrant doesn’t discover the player after a certain period of time, his senses do start to grow more sensitive making it easier to track you down.”

Some of the other revelations Kadoi made weren’t very surprising but are still useful to know. Gunfire is indeed the major thing that can attract Mr. X to your position, especially if he’s nearby. Capcom also had to make some changes to the Tyrant AI from the original Resident Evil 2 for the remake.

The full interview is worth reading, especially if you want to see Kadoi’s thoughts on the Mr. X/DMX fan mod. If you’re looking for more Resident Evil goodness, three classic games are coming to the Nintendo Switch in May.
