Respawn Announces Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond for Oculus VR

In a somewhat surprising move, Respawn has announced that they are making a brand-new Medal of Honor title. The Medal of Honor franchise, which is the propert of EA, has been defunct since the release of Medal of Honor: Warfighter in 2012. However, Respawn’s new project, which is entitled ‘Above and Beyond,’ won’t be continuing the franchise on consoles. It will actually be a Medal of Honor Oculus VR title.

The New Medal of Honor Oculus VR Title: Above and Beyond

Throughout the 2000s, Medal of Honor was one of the core first-person shooter franchises. Indeed, a total of fourteen games were made for the series between 1999 and 2012. However, the fourteenth installment, Medal of Honor: Warfighter, was both a commercial and critical failure. As a result, EA chose to cease any development of future installments. Now, fans of the old franchise will finally be able to return to it, albeit on Oculus, thanks to Respawn.

The announcement was made recently by Respawn during the Oculus Connect 6 conference. During the event, the studio unveiled an announcement trailer for the upcoming game. “In Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, I think we’re finally able to fully realise that vision from twenty years ago of putting you in the boots, allowing you to see through the eyes of someone who was actually there,” says Game Director Peter Hirschmann; “and that’s been the most exciting and fulfilling part of the project.”

Medal of Honor Oculus VR Title Announced 2

The full scale of Above and Beyond, and its exact release date, are currently unknown. However, the game is presumably something of a side project for one of the teams within Respawn; a studio which is, of course, currently working on both Apex Legends and the upcoming release of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Nonetheless, the trailer does make it look as though Above and Beyond is much more than just a short VR experience. The game is due to release sometime in 2020 for the Oculus VR.
