Following the announcement of the next upcoming season for Apex Legends, Respawn today announced plans for the next expansion of the Apex Legends Arenas mode; namely, that the studio will be introducing Ranked Arenas.
The Upcoming Apex Legends Ranked Arenas
With the launch of Apex Legends: Emergence on the 3rd of August, Respawn will also be launching Ranked Arenas; the next new mode for the relatively new Arenas 3v3 round-based game mode. While the mode has been fairly successful, and has already received some new content in the form of maps, there hasn’t been a truly competitive option for it. This will change with the start of the next season.
“Fundamentally, we want Ranked Arenas to offer competitive, evenly-matched games,” explains Respawn; “while also offering a satisfying ladder for players to climb”. According to the studio, Arenas will feature the same rank system as Battle Royale, and will use an invisible matchmaking rating score (MMR) to place players in matches against opponents of similar skill level.
Players will earn Arena Points (AP) for each match after the initial placement matches. Wins earn greater AP than losses, with the amount going down the closer your rank gets to your MMR. Players should note that AP is only earned by completing matches; individual kills do not earn players AP. The idea behind this system is to try and ensure an accurate measurement of player skill.
Respawn has also confirmed that there will not be a split halfway through the Ranked Arenas season, unlike Battle Royale… at least initially. (The studio will reportedly consider introducing splits in the future, after the first season.) For the most part, Ranked Arenas will have the same map rotation as standard Arenas. However, there will be three new maps coming to Arenas in the new season; Hillside (King’s Canyon), Dome (World’s Edge), and Oasis (Olympus).
