Respawn Explains What the ‘code:leaf/net’ Apex Legends Error Means

If you’ve been playing Apex Legends in the last few weeks, there’s a chance that you may have encountered a couple of errors; ‘code:leaf’ and ‘code:net’. In their latest Reddit Check-in, Respawn offered fans a more detailed explanation of what exactly these errors mean and what the studio plans to do to address them. So, if you do encounter this Apex Legends error; here is everything you need to know.

What the “code:leaf” and “code:net” Apex Legends Error Means

Essentially, both the ‘code:leaf’ and ‘code:net’ errors are related to servers. The ‘code:leaf’ Apex Legends error means that the game asked to connect to a server and the server never sent a response. On the other hand, the ‘code:net’ error means that the game was on a server which suddenly became non-responsive. Now, these errors aren’t exactly something new. In fact, they’ve been in the game since launch, but until recently were displaying under a different error code.

“Back at launch we had a few different things that would display an overly generic timeout error,” explains Respawn; “and the problem was that it could mean 4 different things (only one of which was a true timeout). So we added 4 different error strings and put random words in each one so that we could differentiate them both at the customer support level and also on our error tracking backends.”

However, there has been an increase in reports of these errors since the 1.2 patch went out. Specifically, they most often happen on the load screen before the start of a game. As a result, Respawn has begun to investigate, but it sounds as though a solution hasn’t yet been found. “We then gathered enough data to prove that servers don’t think clients are timing out,” continues Respawn; “but clients think servers are timing out. That was a strange finding. […] So we’ve been investigating a lot of situations that could be causing this and working our way through theories to see what it could be and steadily eliminating possibilities.”

Hopefully, Respawn can find a solution for this problem soon. Whatever the case, the studio has said that they will be keeping players up to date on news. For more information on this and other known bugs, players can check out the Apex Legends Dev Tracker site.
