In its next planned phase of expansion for Valorant, Riot Games has today announced that a mobile version of the free-to-play shooter is now in the works. The announcement made no mention of a release date, however, indicating that it could be some time before it launches.
Valorant is Officially On its Way to Mobile
Since its launch on the 2nd of June, last year, Valorant has changed a great deal. Riot have added new playable Agents, new weapons, and rolled out a multitude of balance patches and updates to fine-tune the game. According to Executive Producer Anna Donlon; “One of our top goals this first year was to earn the trust and respect of the global FPS community, and to prove to them that Valorant will always uphold the fundamentals of a truly worthwhile competitive tac-shooter.”
After one year, Riot is now ready to move into a new phase of expansion for Valorant. Part of this will be the launch of a Valorant mobile version. This will be the game’s first new platform, since it has always only been available on PC. “To see our growing player community recognise and appreciate what we’re trying to do with Valorant is beyond what we could’ve expected,” continues Donlon; “and we’re thrilled to soon offer the same competitive Valorant experience to even more global players.”
The move to mobile is hardly surprising given the game’s trajectory and its direct competitors. Other first-person shooters which currently dominate the same market – titles like Apex Legends, Call of Duty, and Fortnite, to name just three – have all made the move to mobile in one way or another. (Or will do soon, in the case of Apex Legends.) In addition, it’s important to note how profitable mobile gaming can be, even for major FPS titles such as these. Call of Duty Mobile, for example, recently passed 500 million downloads.
