Rogue Legacy Gets a Five Year Anniversary Update with New Content

A little over five years ago, in June of 2013 to be exact, indie developer Cellar Door Games launched its 2D fantasy roguelike title Rogue Legacy, an intense platformer/RPG experience that balanced its brutal difficulty with charming visuals. Since then, many other games have been introduced to the roguelike market, but as part of Rogue Legacy’s five year anniversary, Cellar Door Games has decided to draw players back in with a surprise content update on PC.

Firstly, the update adds in support for a number of new languages. Along with the default English option, players can now venture through the full game using French, German, Russian, Polish, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, or Simplified Chinese dialect if they prefer. Cloud saves and mouse rebinding have also been added in.

Can you conquer the game in 15 lives or less?

As for new gameplay content, players can now come across two additional character traits. Prosopagnosia makes your character bad at recognizing faces, while Clonus gives your character “the shakes.” Players hoping for a slightly easier time will be happy to hear that Boss Remixes now only spawn in New Game+ (and higher) runs, and those who don’t mind pitting themselves against the Boss Remixes can also utilize a new Donation Box feature to give themselves a bit of a boost (at a cost).

Lastly, the update has added in a grueling new Steam Achievement called Thanatophobia which requires beating the game with 15 lives or less. However, Cellar Door Games also doesn’t want to force players who were already in the middle of a 100 percent completion run to also earn the Thanatophobia achievement. As a sort of compromise, players who unlock every achievement other than Thanatophobia can also unlock the 100 percent completion achievement with a cheat code that’s listed in the anniversary update’s patch notes.

If you’re a fan of Rogue Legacy, you might also be happy to hear that Ska Studios’ hit 2D adventure game Salt and Sanctuary will soon be coming to the Nintendo Switch. Meanwhile, the prospects sadly aren’t as bright for a potential remaster of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.
