Even though we’re still four months out from the launch of Call Of Duty‘s next installment Black Ops 4, that still hasn’t stopped some fans from looking into their crystal balls and discussing what may be coming down the pipeline for the uber-popular shooter franchise.
Well, according to rumors courtesy of Gaming Intel and Charlie Intel – who’re known for being mostly spot on with previous Black Ops 4 information – Activision will be releasing Modern Warfare 4 in 2019. As to be expected, Infinity Ward is of course developing the title, and it’s interestingly being pitched as a more traditional Call Of Duty experience compared to this year’s Black Ops 4.
As a result, a single-player campaign is allegedly planned for Modern Warfare 4, as well as the customary Zombies and Multiplayer components. Furthermore, a Battle Royale mode is also purportedly being considered, but a final decision hasn’t yet been finalized by the studio.
The Call Of Duty development cycles are unlike any other games on the market. Activision employs three main studios – Treyarch, Sledgehammer and Infinity Ward – to spearhead development on each respective game and these teams each work for three-year cycles. This gives the developers a little bit of leeway to course-correct late in development and react to industry trends or negative fan feedback.
Given that some fans are unhappy about the confirmation of a lack of a traditional single-player campaign in Black Ops 4, Infinity Ward are probably listening very closely to feedback from the Call Of Duty fan community. Perhaps Infinity Ward have pre-emptively designed a single-player campaign with the conscious decision to differentiate themselves from their fellow studio, Treyarch.
At the end of the day, Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare’s original single-player campaign was such a game changer, I’d be surprised if the creative talent behind that monumental experience would opt to work on a purely online-centric game that forgoes a strong narrative focus. All that being said, none of these rumors have been officially confirmed by Activision, so we’d suggest to take them with a pinch of salt.
As for the here and now, Treyarch are busy gearing up for Black Ops 4’s marketing campaign before the game’s 18th of September launch date. Though there won’t be a single-player campaign in Activision’s fast-approaching FPS, we’re still pumped for the newly expanded Zombies mode, the tried-and-tested “boots on the ground” Multiplayer modes and the freshly added Battle Royale mode, too. As always, we’ll keep you updated as more intel comes to light.
