Rumor: PlayStation DualSense Back Button Attachment Under Development

Were you among the gamers who were overjoyed when Sony finally came out with a back button attachment for the DualShock 4? If so, you were probably annoyed—and surprised—when the DualSense released without one. But it looks like that might be about to change. A patent published earlier this month seems to allude to a PlayStation DualSense Back Button Attachment under development.

Is a PlayStation DualSense Back Button Attachment on the Way?

You can view the patent here. It has the title, “

1. WO2021021362 – CONTROLLER ADD-ON DEVICE WITH CUSTOMIZABLE PRESETS.” The publication date is February 4th, 2021, and the applicant is Sony Interactive Entertainment, Inc.

If you read the abstract, it describes an add-on for a controller that features multiple buttons that players can map as they desire. There is a diagram in the patent as well, which shows the attachment on the back of a controller. If you have the back button attachment for the DualShock 4 or you have seen it before, you will note that this new image looks just like it.

So, the implication seems to be that Sony is developing a DualSense Back Button Attachment. But players should note that there are no guarantees. Until Sony makes an official announcement, we cannot know the company’s intentions. For example, they might plan on producing the button attachment now, but change their minds later. Or, they might want to dissuade other companies from trying to offer similar attachments.

The back button attachment adds a lot of functionality to the PS4 controller, and it is sorely missing for current gen controllers. So, let’s just hope that this patent really does signal Sony’s intention to make this happen.

If we find out more about the possible attachment for the DualSense controller, we will let you know in our PlayStation news.
