SaGa: Scarlet Grace Was Inspired by Dragon Age for One of Its Features

SaGa: Scarlet Grace releases tomorrow in Japan with an updated version of the original PlayStation Vita JRPG. It comes with a slew of new and improved features in this version, one of which actually came about as an inspiration from the original Dragon Age game from famed Western RPG developer BioWare. This is really intriguing given that you rarely hear of Western RPG’s influencing Japanese RPG’s.

The feature that Dragon Age inspired in SaGa: Scarlet Grace was, surprisingly, regarding its voice acting. This new version of the game coming to PS4, Switch, PC, and smartphones in Japan tomorrow will feature voice acting. The voices were actually inspired in a way by the original Dragon Age game. In an interview with 4Gamer (translated via Siliconera), it was brought up how interesting it is that the player can select between two types of intonation in the voice acting.

SaGa: Scarlet Grace Designer and Scenario Writer Akitoshi Kawazu responded that the two voice types were actually inspired by Dragon Age. For those who never played the original game (we highly recommend it), players could select from a variety of races to create their character and even numerous voice options.

It’s really interesting that that game was the one to inspire as there are many games that have had that option even in Japan like MMO’s. Kawazu went on to note that “it was fun and I thought it would be cool to do something similar one day to further increase player satisfaction.” Regardless, it’s really intriguing to see a JRPG be inspired by a Western game and not vice versa as is the case many times.
