Sea of Thieves’ Forsaken Shores Expansion Launches on September 19

Now that Sea of Thieves players have had some time to acclimate to the game’s recently launched Cursed Sails expansion, developer Rare is getting ready to unleash the game’s next major pirate adventure, Forsaken Shores. During this week’s Gamescom conference in Cologne, Germany, Rare was on hand to show off a little of what Forsaken Shores offers, and to confirm the expansion will be arriving next month.

The Forsaken Shores beckon.

Specifically, Forsaken Shores will be arriving on Sep. 19, so players have about a month to prepare. As we already knew, the main highlight of Forsaken Shores will be a brand new explorable region called the Devil’s Roar, a region which will be so massive that Rare actually had to split it into three distinct sub-regions.

With a name like Devil’s Roar, it’s probably no surprise that the region will be home to new dangers such as active volcanoes, flaming geysers, earth-shaking tremors, and molten hailstorms. Rare also warns that players who venture into the Devil’s Roar will have to mind where they sail since, in certain spots, the water can become suddenly super-heated, boiling foolhardy players alive in the process. To help avoid these dangers, Forsaken Shores will also introduce usable rowboats that allow for much safer and quicker short-term travel.

Another major feature coming in Forsaken Shores will be Cargo Runs. Rare says that Cargo Runs will be a new form of PvE merchant mission in which they take on a cache of supplies and must then transport it to another set point in the world. However, as is often the case in Sea of Thieves, other players who discover that you’re transporting a Cargo Run cache can interfere if they so choose by either sabotaging your ship or even stealing the cache for themselves.

A full reveal for the Forsaken Shores expansion will likely arrive at some point closer to its September 19 launch. Also, Rare has many more plans for Sea of Thieves beyond Forsaken Shores, ensuring that the game’s world will continue to grow and evolve for many months (and maybe even years) to come.
