A major reveal arrived at the very end of Thursday night’s EA Play Live online presentation. It was announced that a new Skate 4, or other Skate title, is in the works, bringing cheers from fans of the popular franchise. It’s been a while since a Skate game has been part of the sports video game selections, but now it will make a return very soon.
Skate 4 possibly announced during EA Play Live 2020
The EA Play Live 2020 event live-streamed online Thursday, June 18 with plenty of upcoming games on display. That included a look at Star Wars: Squadrons, as well as sports titles FIFA 21 and Madden 21 on the next-gen consoles, the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
During the final minutes of the presentation, a special announcement arrived from Cuz Parry and Deran Chung. They assured fans that a new Skate game is in the works. However, they didn’t call it Skate 4, so it appears that may or may not be the title for the next game. That said it will officially make for a fourth installment in the series.
“We’ve been waiting years, honestly, to make the right game at the right time with the right idea, and really, really pleased to say that we’re here,” Skate Game Director Deran Chung said during EA Play Live.
Chung mentioned it’s still early in terms of the game’s development. Chris “Cuz” Parry added, “We’ve got a long way to go, but we’re stoked, this is just the beginning.”
So far, there’s no other major details for Skate 4 or whatever the new Skate game will be called. However, just the fact that an online social media campaign to get the game going has worked, has to have plenty of fans excited for its return.
Skate joins Tony Hawk, Skater XL game amongst skateboarding titles
It’s been a decade since fans have seen any Skate game. The last installment was Skate 3 way back in 2010. That game is available for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It included skateboarding stars such as Chris Cole, Jason Lee, and Danny Way, as well as an open world environment. There was also an original score composed by John King of Dust Brothers featuring 48 tracks.
Skate 3 generally had good reviews with an 80 out of 100 Metacritic Score based on critical reviews. Game Informer gave it 8.5 out of 10 while IGN gave it an 8 out of 10 in a few of the reviews online. Some gamers are still enjoying the game to this day, and now they’ll have reason to celebrate as a fourth installment is in the works.
The new Skate title is going to be one of several skateboarding titles coming back. Back on May 12, Activision officially announced the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 game. It’s being developed by Vicarious Visions as a remastered version based on previous game code from Neversoft.
The game will feature some of the same licensed songs that the first two Tony Hawk games will have. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 arrives on Sept. 4, 2020, for PS4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows.
In addition to that, we’ve reported on the Skate XL simulation title available for PS4, Xbox One, and Switch in July. That gives a different sort of virtual skateboarding experience and allows for creative modifications from the community. It all takes place in realistic California locations too.
Skater XL arrives July 2020. See more details about the game here.
Basically, fans of skateboarding titles have plenty of reason to be excited. That’s especially true with two brand new video game consoles on the way for the 2020 holiday season. Now we await more Skate 4 news and the first teasers of any new footage.
