Skateboarding fans have been missing classic video game titles such as Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series ever since it stopped being developed. That was five years ago. Well, there’s good news as the new simulation game Skater XL is coming to PS4, PSP Pro, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in the near future. It features a different style of play, allowing gamers to express their creativity through the controller and none of those gimmicky extras that some games use.
What is the Skater XL game?
An announcement was made by Dan Hedgpeth, Director of Easy Day Studios on the Sony PlayStation blog on March 3, letting PS4 and PSP Pro gamers know their skateboarding title is on the way. It’s also going to be coming to the Nintendo Switch and Xbox One, with Steam access available now.
The game is more of a simulation title as compared to traditional sports games or the previous skate titles. It allows gamers to perform tricks and land moves involving fancy footwork through the varied use of the controller sticks.
As Hedgpeth notes in his announcement, “Skater XL uses physics controlled by the thumbsticks to drive all movement in the game.”
He adds, “The game is unique in that it doesn’t have any tricks programmed into it, only control of the movement through the thumbsticks. Each thumbstick is connected to the character’s corresponding foot — the right stick controls the right foot, the left stick controls the left foot.”
A number of clips (like the one below) showing some of the footwork and tricks is at the PlayStation blog post.
So this one is strictly skateboarding simulation for gamers to hang out and try out different tricks and feats. That means none of the side missions, challenges, or career mode adventures that many sports games incorporate. It’s all about giving skateboarding fans room to express themselves on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
