Nothing is more annoying than purchasing a version of the game for your current console only to have to purchase a new version for a future console later down the road. Or, you might buy a copy of the game for console only to realize you also need or want one for PC later, or vice versa. If you are tired of wasting money in this fashion, you will be excited about the introduction of Smart Delivery from Microsoft.
What is Smart Delivery from Microsoft?
Xbox boss Phil Spencer posted about Smart Delivery here. He writes, “This technology empowers you to buy a game once and know that – whether you are playing it on Xbox One or Xbox Series X – you are getting the right version of that game on whatever Xbox you’re playing on. We’re making the commitment to use Smart Delivery on all our exclusive Xbox Game Studios titles, including Halo Infinite, ensuring you only have to purchase a title once in order to play the best available version for whichever Xbox console they choose to play on. This technology is available for all developers and publishers, and they can choose to use it for titles that will be release on Xbox One first and come to the Xbox Series X later.”
He doesn’t mention PC, so at this time, we would assume that Smart Delivery from Microsoft will not yet support PC copies of Microsoft’s exclusives. Nevertheless, this is a giant leap forward in terms of pro-consumer practices. We hope that Sony is paying attention and considers following suit.
Companies in the past probably were banking on making more money in situations where gamers would need to purchase the same title twice. But consider how often you may have sat on the fence about a purchase because of concerns about moving forward to the next generation console. In the long run, gamers will probably hesitate less and purchase more because of this new policy.
