We have all been waiting for a long time for Sony to reveal backwards compatibility details for PS5. While we knew before that most PS4 games would be backwards compatible with the new console, we now know a lot more. Sony elaborated on the matter in a recent blog post. Let’s take a look.
Finally, We Know Full Backwards Compatibility Details for PS5
Sony wrote, “We are focused on the huge catalog of games on PlayStation 4, and we’re pleased that more than 99% of PS4 games will be playable on PS5 on day one. This includes games that have defined the PS4 generation – from critically acclaimed PlayStation exclusives like The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima, to blockbuster hits from our third-party partners.”
In the post, Sony explains how backwards compatibility will work with both versions of the PS5, and confirms “PS4 titles get even better on PS5.”Sony also provides information about backwards compatibility as pertains to PS VR games as well as games through PS Plus and PS Now. You can read up on streaming and game saves as well.
What about PS4 games that are not compatible? Sony writes, “Games that are only playable on PS4 will be noted on PlayStation Store as playable on “PS4 only.” We have a list of games that are only playable on PS4, along with additional information on backward compatibility here: playstation.com/ps5-backwards-compatibility.” As of the time of this writing, only ten games are in that list. So, chances are good that all or most of the games you own for PS4 will be playable on the PS5. So, there is a lot of great news in this post.
