For months, we have had so many questions about the PlayStation 5. Among them, we’ve been wondering what the PS5 controller is going to be like. Will it be called the DualShock 5? Will it be very different from the DualShock 4? What cool new features might it have? Well, we cannot answer all of these questions yet. But we can answer a few, thanks to a recent announcement from Sony which detailed the next-gen controller.
What the PS5 Controller Will Be Like
In a post called, “An Update on Next-Gen: PlayStation 5 Launches Holiday 2020,” SIE President & CEO Jim Ryan made several announcements. He confirmed the official name and the holiday 2020 launch window for the PlayStation 5. And he talked about the PS5 controller. In fact, he spent quite a bit of time discussing it.
He doesn’t refer to the controller specifically as the DualShock 5, nor does he call it by any other name. He simply calls it “the new controller.” Explaining that Sony’s goal is to “deepen the feeling of immersion when you play games,” he goes in-depth into a couple of new PS5 controller features.
One feature is a replacement for the vibration in the DualShock 4. Instead of one generic “rumble,” you will get different sensations for different in-game events through what he refers to as “haptic feedback.” The second feature he talks about is “adaptive triggers” for L2 and R2. As he explains, “Developers can program the resistance of the triggers so that you feel the tactile sensation of drawing a bow and arrow or accelerating an off-road vehicle through rocky terrain.”
Pretty cool stuff! He also chatted with Wired, discussing the user interface for the PS5, improved user control over installations, 4K Blu-ray player in the PS5, and more. Finally, it is also worth mentioning that he closed out the Sony blog by stating that “there’s much more to share about the PlayStation 5 in the year ahead.” That should mean we can expect more updates from Sony soon. Keep up with our PlayStation 5 news.
