We all know that Sony has done well for itself with the current generation in terms of hardware and software sales. But did you know that Sony has now managed to sell more than a billion PS4 games?
Sony Marks a New Milestone: More Than a Billion PS4 Games Sold
Over 274 million PS4 games sold during 2019. That was enough for Sony to announce that combined with sales in previous years, total sales for PS4 games now amount to over a billion.
What went into generating that number? That includes physical disc games as well as digital download games. But Sony is not counting in add-ons of any nature. So, DLC didn’t factor into the calculations. It makes you wonder how high the number of sales would be if it did!
What is also interesting about this is that if you do the math based on the figure for PS4 consoles currently sold (around 106 million), it seems that the average gamer buys between 10 and 11 games.
How many games a player buys is determined by budget, interest, time, and other factors. But when you realize that this is only an average and that many gamers purchase fewer than 10 games, it is easy to understand why big open-world games that offer hundreds of hours of play time have become so popular. For a lot of players, they simply are the most logical option for deriving the most value possible from a tight budget.
So, we expect the trend of large open world games to continue to grow during the PlayStation 5 generation. And with its SSD, the PS5 should do a great job supporting smooth, seamless open world gaming.
