As with most big announcements, it wouldn’t be one without an official announcement trailer. Sony provided that on Tuesday with a short YouTube video to announce the new PS4 Open Series Tournament. The tournament involves competition online for all competitive levels. It features popular games including FIFA 20, NBA 2K20, Soulcalibur VI, Call of Duty, and Mortal Kombat 11.

It’ll feature weekly tournaments with winners getting special rewards and possibly cash prizes. As the video below notes, there are “multiple opportunities” to win in the PS4 Open Series.

How does the tournament work?

Based on the details at the PlayStation Blog, the Open Series will occur each week and there will ultimately be a Monthly Final.

For FIFA 20, the Qualifier 1 begins on Tuesday, June 2 and Wednesday, June 3. There will be two qualifiers each week on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Monthly Final arrives on Monday, June 29.

For the NBA 2K20 game, Qualifier 1 begins on Wednesday, June 3, and Thursday, June 4. There are two qualifiers each week on Wednesday and Thursday. The Monthly Final takes place on Saturday, June 27.

Players will need to participate in weekly qualifiers to get into those Monthly Finals, but along the way there will be other rewards and prizes.

At the start of the competition, everyone involved gets special PS4 Tournaments theme and avatars to use. However, as they progress, rewards are supposed to increase in value.

  • A special PS4 theme for each game that players complete a qualifier.
  • Elite versions of the themes and avatars for players who finish a qualifier in the top 40%.
  • Best of the best PS4 Tournaments Champions themes and avatars for those who make it to a Monthly Final.
  • Rarest of the rare Champions PS4 themes and avatars for players who finish top and showcase their dominance.

Tournament prizes and entry details

In addition to the items mentioned above, there could be cash in your future. Based on the PS blog post, players that get first place in weekly Open Qualifiers can win $100. The top winners from Monthly Finals could take home a share of the prize pool which could be valued at $1,000 or more. However, this is only for “select games” according to Sony PS details.

It’s worth noting that EA Sports FIFA 20 and NBA 2K20 are listed amongst games with the potential to win those cash prizes. Other games listed include Mortal Kombat 11, Warface, NBA 2K20, Soulcalibur VI, and BlazBlue Cross Tag Blue.

In addition to rewards and possible cash to spend or save, there is the potential to get a bit of fame. The PS blog mentions that they’ll “celebrate top players in the NA and EU regions” to feature on regular live broadcasts. These will be players competing on FIFA, Mortal Kombat, and Call of Duty.

In order to enter, gamers must have an active and valid PS Plus account. There are other rules and restrictions including where participants must reside in order to be eligible.

The new PS4 Open Series comes as a result of the success of last summer’s PlayStation 4 Tournaments: Challenger Series. It looks like a great way for gamers to show off skills and possibly grab some cash in the process!
