Following the catastrophic console launch of Cyberpunk 2077, which prompted CD Projekt Red to issue a formal apology, Sony has announced that they will be offering full refunds for the game. Moreover, the company will be removing Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store.
Sony Will Remove Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store
“SIE strives to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction,” reads a statement from Sony; “therefore we will begin to offer a full refund for all gamers who have purchased Cyberpunk 2077 via PlayStation Store. SIE will also be removing Cyberpunk 2077 from PlayStation Store until further notice.”
This is a major u-turn for Sony, who just days ago were refusing to issue refunds. Evidently, the demand for refunds has been so high that the company has decided to change their normal policies. While Cyberpunk 2077 has been suffering from bugs on all platforms, it has proven particularly bad on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4; in some cases rendering the game almost unplayable due to quest glitches or console-crashing bugs.
Removing the game from the PlayStation Store completely is a major move against CD Projekt Red, and a sharp rebuke of the game’s bug-ridden launch. (And possibly also retribution for the studio putting the onus on them to issue refunds with seemingly little to no warning.) There is no doubt that CD Projekt will now be under considerably more pressure to release serious patches as soon as possible. It remains to be seen whether Xbox will follow suit, but given this latest move, they may very well do.
Sony has not given any date for when Cyberpunk 2077 will be available again on the PlayStation Store. In the meanwhile, it will still be available through retail stores, but not digitally. Fans should expect CD Projekt to issue more statements of reassurance in the coming days; in part for their frustrated fans… and no doubt in part, for their shareholders as well.
