Last year, the head of PlatinumGames said that PS5 and Xbox Series X (referred to as “Scarlett” at the time) were “more of the same.” That quote made rounds, and we’ve heard a lot of other developers making similar statements. The PS5 and Xbox Series X next gen consoles are more of an evolution than a revolution. But is it possible that there could be some bigger differences between the next gen and the current gen than we thought? Maybe so, going by what Sony CEO and President Jim Ryan recently said.
Jim Ryan Says That “Bigger Differences” Are In Store With PS5
As reported by Gematsu, while talking with Business Insider Japan, Ryan said, “Each time a new console is released, the processor and graphics improve. Those are enticing of course, but we need to have special appeals as well. We have already confirmed the use of an solid-state drive. Having load times that are next to nothing is a major change. 3D audio and the haptic feedback support of the controller are also things that, when you try them, you will be surprised at how big a change they are. Even just playing the racing game Gran Turismo Sport with a PlayStation 5 controller is a completely different experience. While it runs well with the previous controller, there is no going back after you experience the detailed road surface via haptic control and play using the adaptive triggers. But you know… There are still more unique elements for PlayStation 5 to come that separate it from previous consoles. The ‘bigger differences’ have yet to be announced.”
Admittedly, there is something kind of funny about this type of hype following the reveal of the PS5 logo, which looked incredibly similar to the PS4 logo. But maybe this time Sony isn’t kidding, and what they have to share with us really will be “unique” and a “bigger difference” compared to the PS4. Stay tuned for more PlayStation news.
