Square Enix Won’t Be Releasing Next Gen Exclusives Anytime Soon

If you are a fan of series like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest, then you probably are excited about the prospect of seeing some next gen exclusives from Square Enix. But unfortunately, it seems like we won’t be seeing a next gen exclusive from the company for quite some time. This information comes directly from Square Enix itself.

Do Not Expect Next Gen Exclusives from Square Enix for a While

Square Enix recently released its Financial Results Briefing for 3Q FY2020. One of the questions asked of the company was, “Could you share your thinking on the development of new titles for current- and next-generation game consoles going forward?”

Square Enix replied, “A: The next-generation consoles will have backward compatibility, so we plan for the time being to make our new titles available for both current and next-generation consoles. It will therefore be somewhat farther down the road that we release titles exclusively for the next-generation consoles.”

This is not a surprise, and is in keeping with one of our earlier reports on the gradual transition from PS4 to PS5.  Indeed, in that article, we quoted Bloomberg as reporting, “Sony executives are voicing patience about the next console’s pricing as they anticipate the transition to be a gradual one, said people familiar with its day-to-day operations. Many of the games launched for the PlayStation 5 will also be available to play on the predecessor machine, so revenue from software and related network services is expected to keep the business performance intact.”

So, this seems completely reasonable. Making a complete leap forward to the next generation when a lot of people aren’t going to be able to buy a game doesn’t make a whole lot of fiscal sense for a company. Thus, Square Enix’s decision to launch games for a while on current and next gen consoles makes plenty of sense. Keep up with all next gen updates in our PlayStation news.
