Study Shows That Using Cannabis Can Boost Memory While Gaming
When you sit down to play video games, you probably are unwinding for the day. Maybe you’re enjoying a bowl of chips and a can of soda while you play. And maybe you also are using marijuana. Do you sometimes suspect that cannabis is enhancing your gaming performance? You might just be on to something, at least if a study from the Netherlands has anything to say about it.
What the Study Showed About Cannabis Use and Video Games
The results from the study were reported originally on Joy Stick, but the page where they were posted no longer exists. We have been unable to track the study down in the journal where it was published.
But what we know is that it was conducted by the Groningen Mental Enhancement Department in the Netherlands. The researchers wanted to find out how playing video games affected Alzheimer’s patients, with and without the use of cannabis.
So, the subjects were divided into two groups. Both groups played video games which were more difficult each day. One group was given marijuana, while the other was not. The researchers then waited to see how their performance compared.
It turned out that the group which received the marijuana while playing the video games showed a 43% improvement in memory retention compared to the group which did not use cannabis while gaming. That is quite an impressive difference, and the results certainly would appear to be significant. Since we have been unable to locate the original research article, we do not know what proposed mechanism may have accounted for the difference in memory recall. We also do not know specifically what types of gaming tasks the participants performed.
This is just one study, so we cannot necessarily say anything conclusive based on the outcome. But the results are certainly interesting, and leave us wanting to learn more about cannabis and its potential effects on gamers. And maybe if further research is conducted in the future in this area, we might see similar results again.
Keep in mind that it was specifically memory which the researchers looked at. So maybe cannabis could hypothetically enhance performance in games where memory is involved. But does that mean it will augment your aim in a first person shooter game, or help you become more tactically efficient in an MMO? Maybe, maybe not. We don’t have any data on that yet.
