Gris is a stunning actionless platformer that is coming to Nintendo Switch and PC this December. An exact release date hasn’t been given just yet but this is one 2D game that you will want to keep an eye on. The title is the first game to be released by Barcelona-based developer Nomada Studio. It is being published by Devolver Digital of Hotline Miami fame.
The platformer follows the titular female protagonist Gris. She is a “hopeful young girl” lost in her world and dealing with an unspecified painful experience. Her watercolor journey through sorrow is manifested in her dress, which seems to change and grand new abilities as time goes on. She will grow and begin to see her world in a different way, which will subsequently open up new paths to explore.
Interestingly enough, Gris stands out from other 2D sidescrolling platformers on Nintendo Switch as it is totally actionless, at least in the traditional sense of fighting enemies like in Mega Man 11 or Salt and Sanctuary. According to the game’s official description, this is a serene and evocative experience, therefore, meaning it is totally free of danger, frustration, or death.
Instead, players will explore the meticulously crafted world in Gris through platforming sequences, light puzzle solving, and optional skill-based challenges. We highly recommend you check out the short reveal trailer for the game above to get an idea of how its gameplay will look and feel. Also, it’s worth noting its gorgeous score that we get just a taste of in the trailer.
Gris provides a unique experience in the waves of action-based 2D platformers that have hit Nintendo Switch recently. You can check out the platformer when it releases on Switch and PC this December. Stay tuned here for more information in the coming months as we near its release.
