Japanese game developer GameTomo has announced it is teaming up with The Superhot Team to developer a Superhot spin-off game set in Japan.
The new game, which is currently being referred to as Superhot JP, will retain the same core gameplay as the original Superhot, i.e. time only moves when the player moves, while featuring new level environments and gameplay mechanics that are inspired by the nation of Japan. For example, there will be new levels themed around locales like a hot spring, a Samurai castle, and even a karaoke bar, and players will be able to utilize weapons like throwing stars and a bow and arrow in addition to the usual firearms and melee weapons.
According to the game’s teaser site, the Superhot JP title is just a placeholder and the game will have a different title when it launches for PC and PlayStation 4. A release date hasn’t yet been confirmed, but GameTomo has said that Superhot JP will launch in Japan first with other regions to “possibly” follow. In terms of scale, Superhot JP will function as a sort of standalone expansion, only making minor alterations to the core Superhot formula but still offering an in-depth gameplay experience for a reasonable price. Superhot JP will also have its own story campaign that will stretch across what GameTomo currently estimates to be about 15-18 new levels.
Meanwhile, The Superhot Team is working on its own brand new standalone Superhot experience, a game called Superhot: Mind Control Delete which layers roguelike and RPG elements on top of the standard Superhot gameplay. Much like Superhot JP, Mind Control Delete will be separate from the standard Superhot game and will thus have its own separate price tag, though fans who own Superhot on PC will receive Mind Control Delete for free when it launches in full, and they can currently play an early access version of the expansion ahead of its launch.
